There are many ways to measure your child's learning. Your child's teacher uses report card grades,
classroom work, teacher observations, and end-of-year statewide test results to get a complete
picture of your child's learning. Each year, students participate in the California Assessment of
Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Your child will take the following tests, depending on
their grade level or instructional program:
• Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts and math,
required tests in grades 3-8 and 11
• California Science Test (CAST), a required test in grades 5 and 8 and once in high
school
This year, Capay Joint Union Elementary School District will give the summative assessments in
person.
The testing schedule is listed below:
May 20th- May 31st
You are an important part of your child's education. To make sure your child feels comfortable taking
the tests, you can do the following:
• Explain to your child that these tests are used as tools to help them learn, and that they should
not be anxious 'or scared.
• Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their very best and are there to
help, every step of the way.
• Explore the practice tests with your child on the CAASPP Online Practice and Training Tests
web page at www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html so they can become familiar
with the platform and setup of the tests.
You will receive your child's results at or before the beginning of the next school year. The results will
identify where your child is doing well or needs more help, so you can better support their learning at
home and teachers can better support their learning in the classroom.
To learn more about these tests go to the CAASPP Starting Smarter website at
ca.startingsmarter.org, or review the CDE Parent Guides to Understanding web page at
www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

🌟 **Exciting News for Capay Families!**
We are delighted to announce the launch of our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program at Capay Joint Union Elementary School, starting in the 2024-2025 school year. This program represents a significant step in our commitment to early childhood education and provides a unique opportunity for our youngest learners to thrive.
**What is Transitional Kindergarten?**
Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience, tailored with a developmentally and age-appropriate curriculum that is neither a replication of preschool nor kindergarten. It uniquely blends the rigor of academic standards with the nurturing environment of preschool to focus on language, literacy, pre-math skills, and particularly on social and emotional development. This program is based on research that shows the importance of early readiness for academic success in the later years.
**Eligibility for Transitional Kindergarten:**
- Children who turn 5 between September 2, 2024, and June 2, 2025, are eligible to enroll.
- Please note, no exceptions can be made for children turning 5 after June 2, 2025.
- Children within this age range must enroll in TK unless they meet the age requirement for kindergarten (turning 5 on or before September 1, 2024).
**Program Highlights:**
- Operates 5 days a week with the same daily hours as kindergarten.
- Taught by credentialed teachers focusing on hands-on, experiential learning.
- Integrates fine motor, academic, and social-emotional skills to prepare for the demands of kindergarten.
**Key Differences from Kindergarten:**
- TK serves as a bridge from preschool, utilizing California Preschool Learning Foundations to prepare students for the academic challenges of kindergarten.
**Registration Details:**
- TK and Kindergarten registration for the 2024-25 school year is now open and will continue until classes are full.
- For registration details, please contact the Capay Joint Union Elementary School District office.
**Vaccination Requirements:**
- All TK students must meet California’s kindergarten immunization requirements before the first day of school.
